Modern & Contemporary South African Art
20th Century South African Art features alongside modern Australian masters in the annual London sale of Modern + Contemporary Australian Art, with works by South African artists. The sale features the leading 20th century South African artists such as Irma Stern, Jacob Hendrik Pierneef, Maggie Laubser, Gerard Sekoto and William Kentridge.
In December 2007 Stern’s stunning 1946 portrait, Congolese Woman, smashed the record for a South African picture at auction, claiming the record which Pierneef’s Transvaal landscape had held at Christie’s in the 1990s, and which Thomas Baines’ canvases from The Dawnay Collection had taken at Christie’s in the 1980s.
