Lot Notes

The bronze figure of Atlas offered here derives from the same model used to cast the figure of Atlas Supporting the Globe of Heaven in the Frick Collection, New York (see http://collections.frick.org/Obj334$3112). Almost certainly cast within the workshop of the Paduan master Severo da Ravenna sometime in the first half of the 16th century, the bronze offered here would have functioned as in oil lamp and, as with the Frick example, may also have had an inkwell attached to the base.
